Ripe Persimmons
Three-page book spread translating a haiku into abstract form using only point, line, and shape.
Haiku Poem - Design Aesthetics || - Spring 2025
Objective is to design a three-page book spread inspired by a haiku poem of their choice. The spreads must visually interpret the poem using only the fundamental elements of point, line, and shape. This exercise emphasizes abstraction, composition, and the expressive potential of basic design elements.

As part of the research process, I closely read and analyzed ripe persimmons by Lorin Ford, considering its imagery, rhythm, and emotional tone. This provided a foundation to translate the poem’s atmosphere into visual form
Research

Initial sketches explored different ways of breaking down the haiku into abstract visual elements. I experimented with variations of point, line, and shape to test how they could represent rhythm, form, and mood. These iterations helped refine the visual direction for the final spreads.
Sketches

Digital ideations built on the sketching phase by testing compositions more precisely with scale, spacing, and balance.
Digital Ideations

The refined iteration focused on clarifying composition and strengthening the connection to the haiku. Adjustments to scale, spacing, and visual rhythm created a more cohesive flow across the three spreads. This stage finalized how point, line, and shape work together to capture the poem’s mood.

Color was introduced into the typographic composition. Through palette exploration, I used color to bring emphasis, balance, and character to the overall design.
Color Application
Typeface choices were introduced into the typographic composition. Through exploration of font styles, I used typography to bring emphasis, balance, and character to the overall design.
